Hi, I’mJack Bird.

I’m a founding engineer at a HealthTech startup, building production systems for US healthcare using AI and cloud technologies.

I stepped into this work straight out of university. I’m learning what it takes to build and run real software while helping shape a product from its early stages. Built in Production is where I write about that experience.

What I’m interested in.

My work brings together healthcare, AI, and cloud infrastructure. I’m particularly interested in the practical engineering behind AI features—evaluations, agents, observability, latency, and reliability. Getting a model to produce a good answer is one part of the problem. Making the whole feature useful, understandable, and dependable is where things get interesting.

I also care about product engineering: understanding user feedback, simplifying workflows, choosing what to build, and recognizing when a technically elegant solution still misses what someone needs.

Why I started Built in Production.

I wanted a place to write down the reasoning behind the work. What did I believe at the time? What did I try? What failed? What changed my mind?

Those details are easy to lose once a project becomes a tidy success story. Here, I want to keep the constraints and tradeoffs visible, including the small mistakes and ordinary decisions that teach us something useful.

Still figuring things out.

I’m early in my career, and I’m writing while I’m learning. Some posts will capture a problem I’m still working through. Others will revisit an assumption that didn’t hold up in practice. I want to document that process honestly, while the decisions and tradeoffs are still fresh.

For now, Built in Production is mostly my writing. Over time, I’d like it to become a place where other developers can share their own production stories too.
